Take up tennis and improve your Croydon life

How joining a local tennis club can change your life for the better.

I did not take up tennis until I was in my mid-forties, as a way of averting the middle-age spread, staying off cigarettes, learning something new, and – most importantly of all – increasing my social circle in Croydon.

I started with some beginner group lessons and when I found that I enjoyed it, had some private coaching in my friendly local tennis club: South Croydon Sports Club. It is a badminton, bridge and tennis club, but the tennis section is over 100 years old.

It took a tennis holiday to Greece to give me the courage to actually join the club as a member. I am now the tennis chairperson five years after joining, and the club has really enhanced my quality of life. I am still fit, would not dream of going back to smoking, and have increased my local social circle to such an extent that I often wonder what I did before this!

There is a place for everyone here – tennis is a very social sport

There is a surplus of tennis clubs in the area, but South Croydon Sports Club is a community sports club run by members, not a private club. There is a place for everyone here and tennis is an incredibly social sport.

The club offers more club sessions than any other in the area, so there are lots of opportunities for people like me to join in and play without a partner. Unlike other clubs, it also has a system wherein you can book a club court to play, without ever becoming a member.

There is always something to look forward to socially, and the subsidised bar with food and the sunny garden with a barbecue are an integral part of the club’s day-to-day social scene. I am very keen to personally welcome and show around anyone of any age even vaguely interested in joining, and I am particularly keen to increase our female membership, so please feel free to contact me at the club if you’d like to find out more. I guarantee you – if you follow through on this, you will wonder why you didn’t take up tennis or join a local club years ago. Please get in touch here if you would like to join us!
