The Croydon Underpass remains shut today as engineers work to fix a giant hole as deep as a person.
The hole, which is a staggering five feet deep and 11.5 feet wide, opened up near a disused tram line under Wellesley Road yesterday.
Emergency works to find out what has caused the hole have blocked the northbound carriageway of the underpass and drivers complained the works had caused gridlock in the town centre.
At the site today, near the Jury’s Inn hotel, engineers could be seen looking into the giant hole and piles of rubble and a digger.
Drivers took to social media to vent their frustrations as gridlocked traffic hit the town centre this morning.

The council has not yet been able to confirm what caused the hole but engineers have been on site since about midday yesterday.
A council spokesman said: “We’ve made safe a 1.5 meter deep hole near a disused tram line under Wellesley Road, and are continuing our investigations as a precaution so we can re-open the closed lane as soon as possible.”
