Why Boxpark Croydon has a roof when Boxpark Shoreditch doesn’t

The architect who has designed Boxpark Croydon has explained why our version is completely undercover while the equivalent in Shoreditch doesn’t have a roof over its seating area.

Boxpark Croydon opened last night with 400 guests given a taste of what will be on offer when it opens to the public on Monday.

And anyone who has been to the one in Shoreditch will have noticed that there is one striking diffence between the two.

Architect Gavin Elliott explained that lessons learnt from Shoreditch played a part in how Croydon’s food mall was designed.

It is hoped the roof will mean better business during the winterHe said: “What they have found with Shoreditch is that everything goes really well in the summer but that trade drops off in the winter because it is not under cover.

“That was a key element of the design for Croydon. [Boxpark founder] Roger [Wade] told me to look at Covent Garden and other covered market halls around Europe and go from there.

The food mall is home to 35 businesses selling food and drink from around the worldBoxpark, which is a two-floor food mall next to East Croydon station where different outlets are based in converted shipping containers, is meant to be a temporary facility which will be dismantled to make way for a development of homes and offices on the site.

But there already seems to be an acceptance that if it is a success room will be found on the Ruskin Square site or elsewhere in Croydon so that it can stay.

Mr Elliott said: “There is a five-year lease to be here in Ruskin Square but if it is as big a success, as I expect it to be, I can’t see people wanting it to close.

“Economic factors with the developer will play a part but I’d like to think it’ll still be here after five years.”
