Croydon is a place with no shortage of places to grab a good meal, but which restaurant, cafe or chip shop do TripAdvisor reviewers rank as the best?
Diners have took to the popular review website to judge what they think are the best places to eat in the borough are – and there’s quite a mix.
The review website offers customers the chance to rate restaurants, pubs and bars out of five categories; Excellent, Very Good, Average, Poor and Terrible.
Customers are also able to leave a comment and rate the level of service, food and atmosphere.
Here, in descending order, are the top ten best reviewed Croydon places to eat according to TripAdvisor.
10) Karachi Cuisine, Norbury
The London Road restaurant has many reviewers rating not only the food, but the “excellent service”.
One happy customer praised the staff, writing: “The food is extremely tasty and well cooked and the staff will adjust[the] spiciness to exactly how you want it.
“My partner and I do not know all the dishes on the menu that well but with the help of the staff we always end up with something delightful. Rehan served us; he was brilliant. Gave us excellent advice on ordering and his service was quick and attentive.”
The restaurant serves vegan, halal and gluten free options.
9) Cadillac Diner, Shirley
The American themed diner has all the hallmarks of a typical diner, with huge burgers, steaks and milkshakes on offer.
The popular eatery has received 428 reviews on Trip Advisor, with 67 per cent of the reviews rating it as “Excellent”.
One reviewer said: “Me and my children are regulars to Cadillac. We went one evening and the food just keeps getting better. My children had chicken burgers, Mum had the rack of ribs and I had the burger – all was cooked to perfection.
“Me and my children love the vibe here it is so relaxing and the staff are so friendly. Keep up the good work Cadillac.”
8) KK’s Texan Grill House, Croydon
The Mexican and American Grill house offers a wide range of dishes, from fajitas, to steaks and nachos.
80 per cent of reviewers thought the Grill House, on the High Street, was “Excellent.”
One user has even called it “The place to be in Croydon”.
They added: “The food was spicy, delicious and plentiful and the price was very reasonable. I especially recommend the chicken nachos as a starter.”
7) Bagatti’s, South Croydon
Bagatti’s on South End has been serving Italian cuisine for more than 25 years, and one which still proves to be an old favourite among reviewers
The restaurant has a wide range of options on the menu including traditional pasta dishes such as lasagne and carbonara as well as a selection of pizzas and antipasti dishes.
One reviewer said it was “the best Italian meal” you could get in Croydon.
They said: “I have been to Bagatti’s many times. visited again last weekend. There were eight of us. As ever, Bagatti’s did not disappoint. The food was delicious, piping hot and served with a smile. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation.
“I have never had a bad meal there. Bagatti’s is the best Italian in Croydon without a shadow of a doubt.”
6) Yaalu Yalu, Selsdon
Yaalu Yalu serves a mixture of Indian, Sri Lankan and Asian cuisine which has been described as a “little gem” of Croydon.
Dishes on the menu include Malwana which is a subtly spiced cashew nuts and green bean curry, infused with the chef’s secret spices and red raw rice and coconut sambal.
One reviewer praised the Addington Road restaurant saying: “This place is a little gem and if you like a curry, this just tops them all. Staff and especially the manager were wonderful. Enjoyed it so much ordered a takeaway for my son.”
5) Indigo, Croydon
Indigo is the only Boxpark eatery to feature in Trip Advisor’s top list, and has 81 per cent of reviewers rating it as “Excellent”.
Serving Indian inspired fast food, the restaurant offers wraps, curries and sides.
One reviewer was particularly impressed with one dish, saying: “Really great food, I’d recommend trying the biryani but the other dishes are all good choices too. Excellent customer service from Emily too – Indigo is well worth a visit.”
4) Albert’s Table, South End
Albert’s Table, on South End, is listed in the Michelin food guide and prides itself on using fresh produce which means that the menu changes every day.
Starter dishes can include the likes of shortcrust tart of Dorset crab with rouille dressing and fine leaves or warm salad of wood pigeon and baked autumn vegetables, port dressing and chestnut.
The restaurant is rated highly on Trip Advisor, with one reviewer saying: “Phenomenal, amazing use of locally sourced ingredients, great service, always friendly and good spacing between tables.”
3) Little Bay Restaurant, South Croydon
The quirky Little Bay restaurant on Selsdon Road is one of a group of modern European cuisine restaurants which have been popping up across London and Brighton over the last 25 years
On the menu at Little Bay you will find sea bass paella with saffron rice, mixed seafood, chicken and chorizo or roast breast of barbary duck with red cabbage and sweet potato mash.
The restaurant has 760 reviews, with 397 of them being “Excellent”. One reviewer said: “Wonderful atmosphere, feels like hidden gem as so different from anything else local that I know of.”
2) Karnavar, South Croydon
This Indian restaurant on South End was opened in 2014 by chef Manoj Karnavar who has 18 years of culinary experience under his belt, working at the likes of the Marriott Hotel in Dubai and Claridges in London.
Mr Karnavar creates traditional Indian cuisine with a twist such as the organic hen egg masala sauce, with a rice and coconut pancake or a dish from Goa called the ‘Seafood Sacremento’ which is filled with black tiger prawns, mussels, calamari, sea bass and millet.
Although some reviewers have said the food is expensive others claimed that they experienced the “best Indian meal ever” and customers also complimented the “quick and professional” service.
1) McDermott’s Fish and Chips, Forestdale
Clinching the top spot is the Featherbed Lane restaurant, Mcdermott’s Fish and Chips.
The highly rated restaurant has been open for 30 years and offers a traditional fish and chip shop menu with McDermott’s priding itself on selling freshly caught fish which include cod, haddock and plaice as well as skate and rock/huss when available.
Of the 481 reviews for the restaurant, 397 reviewers rated the restaurant as “Excellent.”
One reviewer said: “Living in Croydon for about 5 years now, I’ve tried my fair share of fish and chips. This is by far the best in town. Definitely a must to try!”
