However, don’t panic! We’ve put together this handy guide to give you all the context you need about just how ridiculously tall a 236m building is.
So, One Lansdowne will be taller than…
Most Southern Rail trains
The standard Southern Rail trains used through East Croydon seem to be mostly the 20m-long Class 377 (I’m awaiting a barrage of emails from trainspotters to correct me, though). Many of the services are four or eight car trains, which come in at about 80m and 160m long.
However, the 12-car service, at 240m, would be ever so slightly longer than One Lansdowne.
I suppose the real question is which will be more delayed?
Every chicken shop in Croydon – stacked
Now, bear with me here because there’s a good reason I work with words and not numbers, but, there are 59 chicken shops in Croydon.Given that most chicken shops occupy only one storey, and the average storey is 3m, it would mean that all of Croydon’s chicken shops would only be grand total of 177m tall.
Of course, that’s only if you were mad enough to want to stack them all on top of each other into a teetering chicken-lover’s Shangri-La.
The Croydon and Crystal Palace transmitters
The iconic Crystal Palace transmitter stands proud at 219m, top of the list of ‘really tall things in Croydon that are not technically in Croydon’.The transmitter’s little sibling just yards down the road at Beulah Hill is 152m tall. Both are taller than Saffron Square, which stands at 134m but will lose out on being the town centre’s tallest building once One Lansdowne is built.
28 double decker buses
It would be remiss of me not to compare the height of this new glass obelisk to the mother of all units for measuring tall buildings in the UK – the double decker bus.The double decker comes in at 8.38m. That’s the old-style Routemaster London bus, which is apparently the gold standard for experts on measuring things by buses.
So, 28 London buses, which funnily enough often seems to be the number queuing down London Road at once, comes in just shy of One Lansdowne at 235m.
Two lengths of Selhurst Park’s hallowed turf
It may have been the home of the soaring Eagles for nearly a century, but if you were to take the 110m pitch from Selhurst Park and raise it vertically like a mad scientist who had invented some form of anti-gravity football (as you do), it wouldn’t come anywhere near the height of One Lansdowne.Even two pitches end to end would come up shy at 220m. Still, maybe that’s a tactic Palace might consider to halt their Premier League goal scoring drought? It would mean plenty of space to get in behind the opposition.
114 Luol Dengs
We racked our brains to think of the tallest person we knew from Croydon, and bar a couple of pretty lanky ex-Advertiser reporters only one name came to mind – NBA star Luol Deng who went to school at St Mary’s RC School in West Croydon. He stands at a mighty 2.06m tall (that’s 6ft 9ins in old money). But it would take 114 of him, standing one on top of the other, to score a dunk from street level into a basket placed atop One Lansdowne.
The Great Pyramid of Giza
The pyramid is the tallest of the seven wonders, measuring up at 146.7m (or 280 cubits for you history nerds) from base to tip.
I wonder, though, thousands of years from now will historians be looking back at the seven wonders of Croydon, and will One Lansdowne make the cut?
