North End will transform into a haven for food lovers, Christmas gift hunters and shoppers alike, when around 20 street food stall holders start serving up an array of delicious, aromatic and colourful delights from right across the globe, kick-starting five weeks of festive celebrations in the town centre.
From homemade Pierogi (Polish dumplings), smoked sausage rolls, hot pulled meat wraps and gourmet burgers to freshly made falafel, crepes, churros, brownies and burritos, the list of sweet and savoury delights is endless and the flavours of Greek, German, Arabic, Polish, American, Spanish, French, Indian and Mexican cuisine will abound. (See appendix for further details).
Helping to get everyone into the festive spirit, the sounds of the Croydon Brass Band and acoustic blues duo 3times7 will ring out from 5pm, as they perform a mixture of seasonal and popular favourites, before the Christmas lights in North End and 16 adjoining streets are turned on at 6.30pm.
“We’re breaking with tradition this year,” said Croydon BID chief executive Matthew Sims.
“Rather than organising a comparatively short, one-off event to mark the start of the festive season, we’re delivering what we believe will be a series of really crowd-pleasing entertainment so that as many people as possible can experience what Croydon has to offer, while seeing the town in an entirely new light.
“With its fantastic array of tasty and unusual treats from right around the globe, our Festive Lights Street Feast will definitely help to get people into the party mood and give them a foretaste of the exciting programme yet to come, at the forefront of which will be our spectacular Festive Fantasia, which launches on November 18th and will help light up Croydon like you have never seen before.”
Festive Fantasia will feature six specially-commissioned giant animations projected onto three key sites in Croydon’s North End and High Street throughout the duration of the festive period.
The animations showcase the talents of local performers and following their launch on November 18th will be broadcast daily between 4.30pm and 9.30pm until December 23rd.
