Here’s a sneak peek inside an adorable new cake shop which is opening in Croydon this weekend

We had a look behind the scenes ahead of the opening of Walnuts and Honey.

A new cake shop and café which specialises in quirky cupcakes loaded with buttercream icing is opening in South Norwood this weekend – and we have been given a sneak preview of what it looks like.

Walnuts and Honey, on Station Road, is officially opening on Saturday (January 20) and will be welcoming customers daily.

So if you’re passing by ahead of the first proper day of opening, here’s a look at what to expect.

There will be eight different kinds of cupcake on the menu at any one time, with two flavours changing every month so customers can try something new – such as chai spice sponge with salted caramel icing or strawberry and Prosecco with “popping” jelly.

Other tempting flavours include Early Grey tea and gooey almond, with a range of vegan and gluten-free goodies on the menu as well.

To wash it all down, cold drinks are available as well as tea and coffee.

You can choose to either sit on one of the six seats in the new eatery or to take your cake away.

But if you stay, you can watch your orders being prepared because the food prep stations are visible from the counter and all the seats.

The space is pretty cosy, but the man behind the shop has dubbed it a “micro-bakery” and said this is “part of its charm”.

The new venue is being run by baker Matthew-Simon Grossett, who decided to set up a permanent shop after seeing his cakes fly off the shelves at South Norwood’s Clocktower Market.

Explaining his menu, he said: “The whole idea behind my cakes is to get people to try new tastes – there are so many different flavours out there but everyone seems to sell the same things like vanilla and chocolate.

“One of my personal favorite flavour combinations is the walnut and black tea cake, which is topped with Manuka honey flavoured buttercream icing.”

Mr Grossett, 31, had been baking at home as a hobby for around six years before deciding to sell his cakes at Croydon markets last summer.

Since then, he has juggled baking for the stall with his full-time job as a digital project manager – but has now quitting that role to work full-time in Walnuts & Honey.

He originally planned to open the shop on January 6, but the date had to be pushed back when decorating works were delayed by bad weather.

Mr Grossett hopes to sell bread at the shop in the near future, but will be focusing on cakes for the first few months.

Customers are additionally able to order wedding cakes, loaf cakes and large batches of cupcakes at the store.
