Croydon’s top business awards opens for entries after sparkling Queen’s Square launch

The 2019 Croydon Business Excellence Awards in association with Willmott Dixon are inviting entries after a sparkling launch event.

The stunning marketing suite of the new Queen’s Square development in Croydon town centre was the venue for this year’s launch, on Wednesday, 3rd Aprilwhich was attended by more than 100 guests.

They heard inspirational speeches by business and political leaders, including Natasha Baum, Senior BID manager for Willmott Dixon, Michael Purefoy, Sales & Marketing Director of R&F Properties, as well as Councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed, Cabinet Member for Business Development at London Borough of Croydon.

There were also enthusiastic testimonials from some of last year’s winning entrepreneurs, who urged firms in the borough’s booming business community to enter in 2019.

Dean Slade, owner and director of 2018 Business of the Year, Bluebird Care Croydon, told guests: “The key benefit for us from entering the awards, was it made us look at how we measure excellence. And winning had a really positive effect, as it raised our profile –  customers see us in a much more positive way and it has been great for our staff morale.”

The prestigious and much-prized Croydon Business Excellence Awards are designed to celebrate and showcase the borough’s business success stories. They offer a range of entry categories – businesses can enter up to three – which have all been refreshed in 2019 to appeal to firms across all sectors. Entry is free and easy to do online through the awards website: www.croydonawards.co.uk

Following the 2019 closing date on 21st June, a shortlist of companies will go forward to the next round of independent judging, which includes face-to-face interviews. The winners – including the overall Business of the Year – will be announced exclusively at a glittering Gala Dinner and Charity Ball hosted by a celebrity presenter in October.

Commenting on the busy launch event, Councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed, cabinet member for economy and jobs at Croydon Council, said: “There was a real buzz in the room last night at the launch and I can only see that excitement building as we make our way through the nominations process and get to the awards evening itself. I would encourage as many people as possible enter the awards so they can be even bigger and better than last year.”

The councillor told guests about the ongoing plans for the £5billion regeneration of the town which is fast gathering pace. She commented: “We have an incredibly vibrant business community across Croydon, which we’re extremely proud of. These awards are a brilliant way of celebrating that community and those who work so hard and it is our privilege to celebrate the work of our local independent retailers and young entrepreneurs by sponsoring the Love Your Local Trader Award and the Enterprising Young Person of the Year Award.

Natasha Baum, Senior Bid Manager with headline sponsor Willmott Dixon told guests: “These awards are really important to us as a company – we have worked in Croydon for many years and are committed to supporting the local community and local enterprise. To be here with like-minded businesses tonight is a pleasure and we look forward to reading your applications over the next few months.”

Michael Purefoy, Sales & Marketing Director of launch sponsor R&F Properties, which is developing Queen’s Square, added:  “Croydon has provided the platform for the very first R&F Properties Group UK development scheme, Queen’s Square.  As relative newcomers to Croydon, we are continually astounded as we learn more about the wonderfully rich tapestry of history and positivity we witness here, and by the wealth of proud and caring stakeholders. We are therefore honoured to host and sponsor the launch of the Croydon Business Awards 2019.”

Launch party guests also heard from 2018 awards winners. In a version of “just a minute,” they described how being involved in the awards has benefited and raised the profiles of their businesses. Speakers included, Adam Bailey, Kingfisher APS; Anna Arthur, Croydonites Festival of New Theatre; Justin Owens, Silverleaf Group; Laurence Grant, Director Match; Akeel Alidina, Caridon Property; and Dean Slade, Bluebird Care Croydon.

During the entry period, the awards organisers, White Label Creative, will be organising workshops offering advice on the entry process – the dates will be announced on the website shortly.
