A hugely popular Croydon bakery is closing after more than 40 years

Michael Brown’s Bakery will shut at the weekend.

A popular Croydon bakery which has been operating in the borough for more than 40 years is to permanently close.

Michael Brown’s Bakery is closing its last remaining branch on Brighton Road, South Croydon due to a “change in personal circumstances of the owner”.

The bakery, which first opened 44 years ago, will shut on Saturday (May 25).

A notice has been put up in the bakery’s window telling customers about the closure.

The notice, signed by owner Philip Brown, says: “On behalf of the company Michael Brown’s Bakery Ltd, a decision has been made to close the shop on Saturday, May 28 2019.

“This decision has been made due to a change in the personal circumstances of the owner.

“We would like to thank all of our customers who have supported the business over the past 44 years, and all of the staff who have worked at Michael Brown’s who have given us the ability to provide the products and service that we believe have been an important part of the local community.

“I would like to confirm that the bakery will operate as normal up until its closing date on Saturday, May 25.

“It is my hope that there will continue to be a bakers at this site and we are in the process of negotiating with another family bakers to open here.”

It is the second shop the business has shut in recent years.

In August 2017, the branch at the parade of shops on Limpsfield Road closed, with Mr Brown again citing “personal decisions” for the closure.

After the news of the closure was posted on social media, those who have shopped at the bakery were quick to say how much they will miss it.

One person said: “Sad to see them close – such a shame.”

Another added: “You will be massively missed. We only moved into the area recently and this is one of the shops we love in the area. Fresh bread and rolls every week and lovely staff.”

One customer who has been using the shop “most of my life” added: “Another great shop gone forever.”

Even Croydon’s police officers were fond of the bakery, and would often visit the business for a mid-shift snack.

A spokesman for Croydon Police said: “We wish the Brown family and all the staff the very best for the future and thank them for all the years they have offered such great food and a friendly welcome to everyone in their shop.”
