‘Extra security’ in place at Croydon JD Sports after ‘invitation’ to town centre riots

Extra police have been deployed over the threat

Police are on alert after an ‘invitation’ to riot in Croydon town centre was shared widely on social media.

The post, which was shared on Snapchat, calls for ‘Croydon Riots 2k19’ to start at the JD Sports today (Thursday November 7).

A police van has been parked outside the store for the past two nights and witnesses report an increase of police patrols nearby in the Whitgift Centre.

Regarding the threat, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “Police are aware of comments on social media relating to a shop in Croydon .

“An appropriate policing plan is in place.”

In the social media post, potential ‘rioters’ are told to wear something black, as well as bring a balaclava and gloves.

It warns: “If you do not know how to run. Don’t come. If you have your school uni [uniform] on. Don’t come.”

The post also says: “Strictly no loud girls.”

A member of staff at the shop told MyLondon that they are aware of the threat and measures have been taken.

She said: “We’re definitely taking the whole situation seriously. Extra security has been in place for the whole week and staff have been briefed what to do if it kicks off.

“If they look like they’re going to try come in, we’re going to close the shop up.”
