New Croydon escape room opening in unit left empty for a decade
The new premises will have a total of nine rooms, with the first opening next month
A new escape room is opening in Croydon , in a unit previously left empty for a decade.
The latest branch of Exciting Escapes will be its biggest to date and will open in Grants, next to the Vue cinema, next month.
The company, founded by David and Peter Gale in 2016, has reportedly thrilled more than 60,000 people across the South of England and has locations in numerous towns and cities.
Participants, working together in a team, are set a task and challenged to solve a series of clues and puzzles to complete one of several themed rooms in just an hour.
David, a dad-of-two who designs all the rooms personally, said: “People love escape rooms but there’s nothing in this part of South London so we will be the first in this area, which is really exciting.
“We can’t wait for people to try out the new escape rooms in Croydon and there is already a buzz building ahead of the opening, with lots of interest on social media about what we’re doing.
“It’s great to be able to restore a venue which has been empty for so long.”
Bookings went live this month for the first four rooms, which will open around Christmas. Two are themed around the 1950s Cold War, while another is set in a 1990s record shop, complete with a fitting soundtrack.
The remaining five rooms are set to open next year and it is hoped the branch will create 30 jobs and boost local employment.
Obtaining and refurbishing the abandoned site, including restoring power and water after it had been out of use for so long, has taken 18 months.
Exciting Escape rooms have been played by more than 60,000 people to date and the attraction is rated as number one on TripAdvisor in numerous locations including Basingstoke and Portsmouth.
