The 43 Whitgift Centre stores that have left in just 4 years
Mothercare, BHS and Starbucks are among those no longer at the popular shopping centre
Love it or hate it is undeniably sewn into the very fabric of Croydon life.
It seems everyone has opinion on what should be done with it and if the Westfield/Hammerson shopping centre will ever actually be built on the site
The Whitgift Centre opened in the late 1960s and was once the largest covered shopping development in Greater London.
Over the years many stores have come and gone.
The late 2000s brought recession and with online shopping proving hugely popular the high street is struggling.
At the Whitgift a total of 43 shops and businesses have left the centre since 2015.
Among those are big names, including HMV, Mothercare, BHS and Starbucks.
However, a lot of the empty shop units have since been filled – especially since many of the concession stores inside Croydon Village Outlet have been moved into the Whitgift in recent weeks.
The situation is not unique to London though with the Bluewater Shopping Centre also losing 46 stores in the last two years.
So take a look at all the places that have left the Whitgift Centre in the last four years below.
