Huge new buildings going up on the site of Croydon’s former council offices in Park Lane are getting taller as the days go by.

Surrounded by cranes, you might have looked up and wondered what the buildings are going to be.

This week the windows of some of the new Taberner House development actually started going in.

Work on the four tower blocks of 35, 21, 19 and 13-storeys started back in May 2018 and is on track to be completed in next year.

The site was previously home to Croydon Council ‘s headquarters for more than four decades before it was pulled down in 2014. The council is now based in Bernard Weatherill House, on the other side of Mint Walk.

As well as the main tower, there will also be a 21, 19 and 13-storey buildings constructed.

But what are the huge towers actually going to be?

Overall it will be made up of 513 flats, 50 per cent of which are set to be categorised as ‘affordable’ with a mixture of shared ownership and ‘affordable’ rent.

The development built by HUB has been designed by architects AHMM and the blocks include rooftop gardens and shops.

The Queen’s Gardens are also set to be revamped with a new play space and cafe.

Alex Hall, Senior Development Manager at HUB, said: “Construction work is ongoing at the Queen’s Quarter and we are making good progress towards completion of the blocks next year.

“We are also pleased to be working with Croydon Council in finalising arrangements for the new and improved Queen’s Gardens, the design vision for which was led by local people in collaboration with HUB.

“Work on the gardens is expected to begin this year as we continue working hard to deliver 513 much-needed homes for Croydon.”
